Grinnell High School student Philip Palmer, right, and some friends pose with his sousaphone in 1937.

Music tradition and education in Grinnell dates back to its earliest days, both at Grinnell College and in Grinnell’s public schools. In addition, there are several Grinnellians who made a name for themselves in the world of music, including composer Isabella Beaton (1870 - 1925) and Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame 4-H musician Fannie R. Buchanan (1875 - 1957).

Today, the Grinnell school district students participate in band from Grade 5 through Grade 12, and Grinnell College supports many music ensembles for students and community members, from choral music to Latin music to orchestras. In addition, the Grinnell Community Band has provided an outlet for musically-inclined residents for nearly 40 years.
